The Foo Fighters was formed in Seattle in 1994 by Dave Grohl (drummer of grunge band Nirvana) after the death of Kurt Cobain. It started of as a solo project and a year later, he recruited bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist Pat Smear to turn the project into a band. They named themselves after a term used by used by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II to describe various unidentified flying objects or mysterious aerial phenomena. Their musical style is best described as a blend of alternative rock, grunge (a subgenre of alternative rock that fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal, with lyrics that are typically angst filled, often addressing themes such as social alienation, apathy, confinement, and a desire for freedom), and post grunge (a derivative of grunge music that uses the sounds and aesthetics of grunge, but with a more commercially accessible tone). They’ve had a stellar career with 8 studio albums, 1 live album, 2 compilation albums, 4 video albums, 36 music videos, 4 extended plays, 26 singles, and they’ve sold 12 million records in the US alone. They’ve received many accolades including 11 Grammy Awards.
